In September of 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting the ComicCon Museum in San Diego, CA. The "Beyond Amazing" exhibit, celebrating 60 years of Spider-Man had debuted in July, and since I was in town, you know I just had to go! It was, in a word, SPECTACULAR (pun intended)! The exhibit did a wonderful job showcasing the 60 year history of the Webspinner, beginning with Amazing Fantasy #15, and continuing to the modern-day Spider-Man.
The exhibit was broken into sections, each featuring a different era of the character, complete with influential artists, storylines, milestones, original comic art, and props from the movies. It even featured a section devoted entirely to Spider-Man merchandising throughout the decades. And, of course, there was a section devoted to the animated series, and video games as well.
It ended with a huge mixed media wall that featured all the different versions of Spider-Man throughout the Spiderverse.
All-in-all, I had a wonderful time and it was AMAZING (another intentional pun)! In fact, I had such a great time that my wife actually let me go through the exhibit a total of three times while we were on vacation (one of the many reasons I love her so much)! I took a bunch of pictures, which I have posted below. I hope you enjoy looking at them. I also have a walk-through video of the exhibit which is at the bottom of this page.
My wife, Kim, is an AMAZING (see what I did there?) wife. She begrudgingly puts up with my childish obsession with the Amazing Spider-Man, and I know that it can get annoying at times. Even though she didn't really have an interest in going to the Beyond Amazing exhibit, she went with me because she wanted me to have a good time on our vacation. To her surprise, she actually enjoyed it! She got to see why I identified with this character when I was a child, and now has a little bit deeper understanding of what Spider-Man means to me. In fact, she actually let me visit the exhibit a total of three times while we were on vacation!
She can be seen in the pictures above recreating the iconic upside down kiss scene from the very first Spider-Man movie. I didn't even get jealous!
So, to my lovely wife I say a heartfelt Thank You. It meant the world to me for you to let me indulge in my Spider-Man obsession, and I'll never forget it. I love you 3000, and that's almost as much as I love the Amazing Spider-Man.
After almost two years of putting it off, I finally made the walk-through video of the Beyond Amazing Exhibit in San Diego. At almost 20 minutes, this video is rather long, but I really wanted it to be this way so that all of the Spider-Man fans out there who didn't have the chance to experience this "Amazing" exhibit in person could at least experience it through video.
With that being said, the video really does not do the actual exhibit justice. The overall design was stunning and the care and respect that was given to the artwork and other displays was wonderful. For me, there was a feeling that this exhibit represented something more than just a comic book character. It represented an overall idea of what humanity could be if we all lived our lives like Spider-Man. It represents hope that humanity can rise-up from what we are to something that we were meant to be - good, kind, caring and respectful. This exhibit actually moved me to tears.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.
